Mactaggart Leisure Centre

4 x 25m Swimming Pool The pool measures at 0.9m at the shallow End, 1.2m at the middle section and 2.0m at the Deep End. The pool water is heated using waste heat from the neighbouring Bowmore Distillery and the pool hall air. It has been estimated that this gives the Mactaggart Leisure Centre a saving of 15% in fuel costs. Being the centrepiece of the Leisure Centre the pool plays host to a wide range of courses and activities including Aquacare, Parent & Toddler Sessions, Rookies, Holiday Programmes and so much more!
Fitness Studio The state of the art gym consists of four cardio vascular machines in the form of treadmill, cross trainer, Concept-2 rower, recumbent cycle and six individual station fixed resistance machines. In order to use each piece of equipment, everyone must take part in an introductory session to understand how each machine works, health and safety aspects of gym use and the necessity of warming up and down (before and after a work out respectively). After completing the introductory session laminated user cards will be issued and the holder of those cards will be entitled to use the gym at most times during the week. Special tailored fitness programmes, Women's Sessions and 50+ sessions area also offered at the Fitness Studio.
Sauna This is situated in the ground floor of the leisure centre. Water is poured over hot coals to produce a relaxing and invigorating sauna heat. Ideal for relieving tension, aches and pains, sore muscles and joints, and to help with difficulty in sleeping. The sauna is well lit, spacious and has disabled access. No booking is necessary and the sauna is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 12pm – 9pm and Saturdays and Sundays, 10.30am – 5.30pm.
Tan Club Vertical Sunbed This is situated in the top floor of the Leisure centre, outside the office and Fitness Studio. Our Tan Cab vertical sunbed is quick and easy to use and provides you with a beautiful and even tan all over, including those areas missed by a conventional bed. It is also more hygienic as vertical tanning does not involve perspiration or contact with the tanning surfaces. Please note that users must be aged 18 and over and the maximum exposure time is 8 minutes. Only a maximum of one session per week is permitted. The sunbed is open Tuesdays to Fridays, 10am – 9pm and Saturdays and Sundays, 10.30am – 5.30pm and must be booked in advance through reception on 01496 810767.
Howat Activity Room The Howat Room comprises of Audio Visual equipment, kitchen facilities and enough floor space to hold meetings, lectures, courses, private and children's parties. A crèche also takes place once a week every Tuesday afternoon. Fitness activities such as Step Aerobics, General Conditioning and Yoga also take place in the Howat Room.
Sports Shop At reception, we sell a wide range of quality customised and Branded sportswear, sports accessories and souvenirs to remind you of your visit. Products include swimming trunks and costumes at affordable prices and branded T-shirts and fleece jackets bearing the Mactaggart Leisure Centre Logo. Please ask at reception as not all goods are on display.
Advertising Space A2 sized Poster Frames are also available to local businesses to advertise their products and/or services. The advertising boards are situated in the ground floor and are wall mounted in the main traffic areas of the leisure centre. Prices start from £40 and local firms have the choice of either designing the poster themselves or sending text and photographs to the leisure centre to get it designed by a local professional photographer. Advertisements from local businesses will have substantial exposure as Mactaggart Leisure Centre is Islay's only wet weather attraction which has 25,000 visitors per annum and is open 6 days a week and 52 weeks a year.
